seo on page

In the past few years, Google the giant search engine has released several updates in order to eradicate the apprehensive seo techniques and there is a drastic change in on site SEO rules. Mainly Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird are the most popular updates from Google. Panda is designed to move down low-quality sites and rank high-quality sites in top of search results pages (SERP). Penguin is designed to avoid the sites in top results that have cheated by creating unnatural backlinks to gain an advantage in Google results. Hummingbird is designed to calculate the engagement that a site establishes with users and it is different from panda and penguin.

As per as seo is concerned it is great to know about the algorithm updates because you can get an outlook on how to do on page optimization and off page optimization.

What does On site seo really mean?

On site seo (Often called On page Seo) refers to the optimizations that you can do within your website/ web page by following search engine guidelines. A Seo Expert always starts with On page optimization rather than off page optimization because it is the building block. While optimizing your website optimize it for the users, not for the search engines. On page seo is mainly based on the user engagement with a site. As Google is becoming smarter, you need to develop pages according to the user query. This tells that one of the major factors influencing on site optimization is the relevance.

This is what Jeff Eisenberg states about the user interaction and engagement.

It's much easier to double your business by doubling your conversation rate than by doubling your traffic

If you put your efforts to increase the interaction and engagement with the users, you'll see an uplift in your rankings and as well as the search presence.

Is SEO-On page optimization necessary?

In my view, seo-on site optimization is very necessary for the websites/blogs. Most of the newbie bloggers like me might not have concentrated on the seo. Then a question arose in my mind --

  • Why is my site not ranking on the first page of search results?

It is due to several reasons, but the thing is not paying attention to SEO, then that's presumably the biggest reason.

When we are optimizing a post with SEO, we certainly follow a set proven methods to rank it higher in top search results (SERPs). Google takes many other factors into account like social media signs(Likes, Shares, Tweets, Followers etc.), backlinks(Links from other sites pointing your site), domain authority, bounce rate, page authority and many other off-page metrics in accordance with on page score.

This tells us that on site seo is necessary. As for On site seo is concerned, our goal is to optimize the web page content in an organic way, so that search engines can easily detect keyword targeted and guide our site to the targeted users.

On site seo Techniques For Better Ranking

1. Page Title

Every page must have a unique title because it describes the page and it is the most important on site factor. If the web page title is well optimized and good looking then more people will click it. As a matter of fact, the more clicks web page gets the highers will be the rank (as per CTR- Click Through Rate). While you are forming the page title make it in short, descriptive and clear. Use targeted keyword once in the page title (very essential) at the beginning or somewhere else. Some people often use the main keyword twice thinking that there will an increase in ranking but it actually hurts the rankings. Don't do it. A page with the title 'On page seo techniques' is superior to ' page1'.

The absolute length of a page title is 15-60 characters. Make sure your title is within the 60 characters because Google will only show the first 60 characters of your title. If it exists 60 characters then the result will look something like this.

You can use Moz-preview tool to preview how title tags will take shape in the search engine results page(SERP).

2.Meta Description

The Searcher will see this meta description in the search engine results page. It doesn't improve your rankings as meta tags are omitted by the majority of search engines but they play a vital role. Nearly 43% of people click by seeing the meta description alone.

While forming the meta description keep it under 100-160 characters. You should write a relevant and unique meta description for each page and use the targeted keyword in the meta description. Don't spam users/search engines by your page description, make it user/search-engine friendly.

For WordPress or Blogger users it is easy to write the meta description. If you are WordPress users it is better to install Full Seo Pack plugin. If you are blogger users, you can write the description under search description box.

3. Permalinks (URLs) Structure

It is also an important factor in on site metrics. Again, you should use the main keyword in the URL and must avoid HTML entities and special characters (@, $, ', "), under scores(_), numbers(1,2,4) and capital letters (A, F, D, F) in the URLs. You must create a unique and relevant URL for each page and it must within 255 characters. Using dashes is the best practice to separate the string URLs and this practice is supported by many browsers.

          https://www.yourdomain.com/post_content_page1 (bad)
          https://www.yourdomain.com/post-content-page (good)

4. Site Speed

Site speed is one of the important factors in on page seo metrics which affect your ranking in search engine results page(SERPs). Most of the people don't like to read articles/content from the sites whose site speed is more. From a recent survey, websites are losing 7% of conversations for a single second delay in response time. As per the estimated statistics, e-commerce sites are losing $2.5 million every year for the second delay in response time if they make $100,000 a day.

There are many ways to decrease the site speed. Use one of these to check your website speed - Pingdom, Google Insights, Gtmetrix and Varvy. If your site speed is more than 3seconds then follow these steps.

  • The main one is to optimize images. Suppose you have a website image resolution as 500x500 then if you upload images with the higher resolution like 1280 x 720 then there will be an effect on our site load speed. In order to decrease site load speed, you need to convert them to 500x500 resolution. You can decrease the image size from 150kb - 12kb using Reduce images without losing image quality.
  • Reduce the landing page redirects and HTTP requests if any.
  • Use cdn(Content-delivery-networks).
  • Minify HTML, CSS and Javascript and use a lazy script to load images after all the content is loaded.

5. Heading Tags Usage

In heading tags H1 is the most important tag. You need to place the targeted keyword in the H1 tag. There must be only one h1 tag per page. You can use other heading tags(H2, H3, H4, H5, H6) as subheadings to distinguish the content. Don't use more h2 or h3 as Google algorithms won't like that and use them when required. All these heading tags must contain more than 15 characters so that it might good for seo.

You should use strong/bold(<strong>/<b>) tags as your subheadings when you are headings are less than 15 characters. Also, use them to highlight some important words. It would be better if use underlines, italic tags in your content.

This what Matt Cutts Says about the repeatings Headings tags.

6. Keyword Density

Keyword density is the number of times your targeted keyword is used per post. The ideal percentage of keyword density is 2-5% per page. The targeted keyword usage changes according to the post length. If your post is in between 300-500 words, probably you should use the targeted keyword only 2 times. If post length increases then the value changes. The main thing you should remember is to place your targeted keyword in the first and last paragraphs of the page and use whenever required in the content. You can use the Keyword analysis tool to check your keyword density.

Here is a video by Matt Cutts on Keyword Density.

7. Content Writing

Content is the king of the page. The freshness and quality of your content will make you popular without seo. If you had a great content on your web pages then more users will engage with it. Users need content, not the seo. What I mean to say is write a great content first and then focus on the seo. While you're writing the content, write more than 800 words and it is very necessary to write keyword rich content that engages with users. Some sites like Wikipedia, wiki how always rank high in google because of engaging long-form of content. Sites with low quality or thin content don't rank in Google. Google needs users to be satisfied with the result. Before you shall start writing your content know the user intent first and write detailed content about the topic selected.

User Intent Example:

          Buy blue Samsung refrigerator
          Blue Samsung refrigerator review

Both phrases are geared towards the same thing 'Samsung Refrigerator' but here search intent for the phrases is different.

Users searching for the first phrase are ready to make a purchase but the users searching for the second phrase are likely to know the information whether to make a purchase or else choose an another product.

8. Image Optimization

Image Optimization is the way optimizing images for the search engines. Search engines can't read the images as like as text but there must some thing to make an image readable to search engines and that is the alternate text(Alt tag). In image optimization, you need to specify an alt text for each and every image that you place in the post. While you're making alternate text use the targeted keyword in it. Give keyword optimized alt text to only one or two images. Don't overdo it because search engines won't like it. For the remaining images give your own alt text without using the targeted keyword.

How is image optimization helpful?

Google shows the image results for every search query. These images are gathered from several websites and get indexed in google. If people click on an image then google will redirect them to the related website associated with it.

Not only images other Multimedia's like videos, Infographics, Slides are also helpful in the same way.

9. Internal Linking & External Linking

Internal linking - linking pages of relevant content within a website. When you do internal linking use the keyword in the anchor text but don't overdo it. Internal linking helps your users to stay more time on the page and it passes the page rank to the links associated with it and it also decreases the user bounce rate. It helps to your user to gain more information than required. It helps in crawling of your web pages. If any new page is linked with a crawled page then the spiders will crawl it too. Remember to crawl any new page at least one link is required. Make sure all the internal links linked are of relevant content and it is better to not build more than 15 internal links per page.

External Linking - linking pages to another site. You can link to any site you required but make sure you're linking trusted sites only. While you're linking to a non-trusted website or doubtful sites, use rel='nofollow' to not pass the link juice.

Make note that you should use dofollow for trusted domains and nofollow for non-trusted domains.

Keyword Placement in required elements

  • Place it in the title.
  • Keep it in permalinks.
  • Place it in the H1 tag.
  • Keep it in Meta description.
  • Place it in first and last paragraphs.
  • Keep it in image alternate text.
  • Use LSI(Latent Semantic Indexing) keywords in the content.
  • Use related keywords in H2 or H3 Tags.

Things to focus on

  • Heading tags must be greater than 15 characters.
  • The title must be within 60 characters.
  • Meta description must be within 160 characters.
  • Write content at least more than 500 words.
  • Optimize images before uploading(resize and compress).
  • Optimize your page load speed.
  • Use Multimedia like Infographics, Videos, Slides etc.
  • Make relevant internal links to relevant pages.
  • Make external links(outbound links) to authority sites only.
  • Use nofollow if you are linking to a non-authority site.
  • Add social sharing buttons to the post either as inline or floating buttons.
  • Add related posts at the bottom of every post.

Things Not To Do

  • Don't use more than one H1 Tag.
  • Don't stuff your keyword in the content.
  • Don't use more H2 or H3 tags.
  • Don't use the keyword on all alt texts of images but use it for an image or two.
  • Don't use underscores, numbers, special characters and capital letters in URLs.

So the above steps will help you in increasing the on site seo score of your site. It is very important that you should not try to trick the search engines.

My advice to you is to write informative, most engaging useful content to the readers. Take your own time and strive your level best to create content that readers like so it can help you in better rankings.
